New River Gorge National Park is home to one of the oldest rivers in North America. Despite its name, the New River is estimated to be between 10 and 360 million years old, making it even older than the Appalachian Mountains through which it flows. The river has carved a deep and rugged canyon over millions of years, creating one of the most scenic landscapes in the eastern United States. This ancient waterway is unique because it flows northward, unlike most rivers in the region, which generally flow south or east.
